The movie stars Denzel Washington in the titular role and Russell Crowe. American Gangster is produced and directed by Ridley Scott.
It was released on November 2 of the same year in the US and Canada. Critics wise, the movie earned praises and reviews and earned several rewards and nominations to boot.
Their stories cross as Roberts sets out to bring down Lucas. When he first came to Harlem he was told to become a door man at a hotel, but Lucas knew that real money was made on the streets, through casino gambling and illegal drugs.
He eventually slips up and finally, he falls into the hands of Roberts. He offers Roberts a deal — surrender all his offshore accounts and produce a list of all corrupt cops, and he gets a lighter sentence.

View All Critic Reviews Feb 25, Even based on true events most films like this like to add more action in places but Ridley Scott focuses less on the action side on more on the story telling side, And it is told very well, With a very strong cast lead by Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe who were both fantastic, It doesn't drag as much as you think given the running time but maybe sparkles of action wouldn't of gone a miss, Having said that the ending was good and the whole tone of the film was great too, It's far from you average American drug gang films but it's up there with the best.
Jamie C Super Reviewer. Aug 20, If it's a true story chances are a film studio will adapted it to the big screen regardless of the material.
Some of these true stories have gone to become classic films while other serving as an insult. American Gangster is in the middle ground taking an interesting story and downplaying it to fiction without anything separating it from being another fictional crime film.
American Gangster is set in s America, a detective works to bring down the drug empire of Frank Lucas, a heroin kingpin from Manhattan, who is smuggling the drug into the country from the Far East.
The plot is fabricated so do not go into this expecting an accurate presentation of the actual events. The fictionalized version of the story is prone to questionable decisions.
For example, in the film officer Richie Roberts is in a custody battle with his recently divorced wife. Now the real life Richie Roberts never had any kids and in the film Robert being a father serves the plot no purpose being toss aside in favor of taking down Lucas empire for a large portion of the film.
Choices like these distract from the flow of the film padding out a story that doesn't need filler. Because of this many important characters it introduces into the fold of either sides never come into fruition.
Moving the plot forward, but serving no great purpose in the whole picture. It's straight forward linear structure sadly does it no favor playing out exactly playing out like a story like this would.
Showing the rise of the criminal empire, an honest cop operation on taking a powerful criminal down, honest cop discover corruption in the system, the criminal beginning to make mistake, honest cop getting a big break, and sadly you will know how it'll play out.
For its very noticeable faults American Gangster script does get things right. It's narrative switches between its two main character providing distinct characteristic.
Both see themselves as examples that should be followed because they follow a strict life code built on core American values like integrity and hard work.
Sharing us their conflicts, their low points, and their triumphs. Providing two vastly different view on the American dream and struggle to maintain it together.
Contrasting each other pathos and ethos for what they strive for. Both the main characters get considerable amount of development thanks to it slow pace.
Being fully realize serving as excellent character piece in the middle of its distorted plot elements. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe are without a doubt the glue that hold this picture together.
Denzel Washington plays his character with sense of tenderness and cruelness. Coming off as a man who you respect and fear at the time.
Russell Crowe is equally just as excellent. Crowe is messy, disorganised, and ruggedness in playing a cop losing everything he did. Ridley Scott capture the gritty characteristic of New York.
Minor light and bright images littered throughout the film, but there is a certain sense of subdued grey that is carried for the majority of it.
It definitely felt authentic to the time period, and the details in keeping this way are numerous. A seventies feel is nicely achieved through the use of down-tinted color and many, but not overstated, period outfits and hairdos.
It's also an interesting point brought out in Scott's occasionally documentary-style. American Gangster fictionalizes true events for a decent fictional crime film saved by its two more than compelling leads.
The plot could have risen to become an epic crime story, but unnecessary padding and weak story elements hold it back from reaching its director ambition.
Caesar M Super Reviewer. Dec 07, American Gangster provides what is to be expected of the obvious title: violence, drugs, and a daring story.
Eugene B Super Reviewer. Sep 18, Another great film starring Denzel. It has a good amount of violence if that kind of thing matters to you , and a great story line.
If you like movies such as Scarface and The Godfather, then this is a good movie to watch within that genre. Eric A Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews.
Dominic Cattano: Success. You can be successful and have enemies or you can be unsuccessful and have friends. Frank Lucas: There's your 20 percent.
Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson: This is the problem. This is what's wrong with America. It's gotten so big, you just can't find your way.
The grocery store on the corner is now a supermarket. The candy store is a McDonald's. And this place, a super-fucking discount store.
Where's the pride of ownership, huh? Where's the personal service? You see what I mean? I mean, what right do they have, of cutting out the suppliers, pushing out all the middlemen, buying direct from the manufacturer?
Sony this, Toshiba that. All them Chinks putting Americans out of work. That's the way it is now. Well, scratch that, naked women workin in a drug lab was an eye-opening scene.
Well, in the American Gangster you got him saying this line again, and by God does he have it down.
There are scenes when you know he's gonna say it, and he still pulls it off incredibly well. Denzel is one actor you really never have to worry about it in the acting department.
You've got Russell "Mr. Oscar" Crowe playing the other lead, and like always, he always has the character down. He was great in this flick, the accent, the mannerisms, all of it.
Though, his character's story was interesting in that he was in charge of the case to figure out who the big boy druglords were, his side story with his wife was for me the "dull" parts of the film.
They were well-acted and all that, but mostly, it was just character development that isn't needed. Russell Crowe's good enough an actor to portray a struggling cop without a family problem.
And also let me say Josh Brolin as the crooked cop was great. I didn't need a side-story of him doing tons of drugs and banging prostitutes American Gangster was a really good flick.
It had amazing acting mixed with scenes that shed a new light on drug-trafficking But don't let that sway you if you enjoy good movies and or crime films.
And also, Frank Lucas is one hell of an interesting personality. My man. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show.

Nominated for 2 Oscars. Edit Cast Cast overview, first billed only: Denzel Washington Frank Lucas Russell Crowe Richie Roberts Chiwetel Ejiofor Huey Lucas Josh Brolin Detective Trupo Lymari Nadal Eva Ted Levine Lou Toback Roger Guenveur Smith Nate John Hawkes Freddie Spearman RZA Many of the people portrayed, including Roberts and Lucas, have stated that the film took much creative license with the story, and three former DEA agents sued Universal claiming the agency's portrayal was demoralizing.
A prequel television series was made in called The Godfather of Harlem. When Johnson dies of a heart attack, Lucas takes control of both his criminal empire and the gangland underworld of Harlem.
After his exiled and addicted partner overdoses on a potent brand of heroin called "Blue Magic", Captain Lou Toback puts Roberts in charge of a task force that targets local suppliers.
Lucas buys Blue Magic directly from producers in Thailand and smuggles it into the U. His low overhead allows him to eventually wholesale Blue Magic to most of the dealers in the New York area.
With this monopoly, Lucas expands his control to nightclubs, casinos, and prostitution. He buys a mansion for his mother and recruits his five brothers, including Huey and Turner, as lieutenants to spread his empire.
During his rise to becoming Harlem's undisputed crime boss, Lucas falls in love with Eva, a Puerto Rican beauty queen.
As Lucas' business prospers, he makes a point of operating quietly and dressing with a modest conservatism both as a sign of strength and to avoid attracting police attention.
Also, he stays away from the drugs to avoid making hard decisions under the influence. However, Lucas violates these principles when he attends the Fight of the Century with Eva, sporting gaudy clothes that were a present from Eva prior to their wedding; Roberts discovers this after he attends the fight and notices the previously unknown Lucas with even better seats than the Italian mobsters.
Roberts soon begins to investigate Lucas, during which the two individually cross paths with corrupt NYPD detectives led by Nick Trupo, who constantly attempts to extort and blackmail Lucas into giving them a cut.
Lucas thereafter finds his reign challenged by local gangster Nicky Barnes , who has been diluting Lucas' Blue Magic and selling it under the same brand name.
He also finds himself at loggerheads with Lucchese mafia boss Dominic Cattano when the latter threatens to destroy Lucas' family unless he gets in on a deal.
After the Fall of Saigon cuts off Lucas' supply, he is forced to rely on the other crime rings. Roberts' detectives witness Lucas' cousin and driver shoot a woman and then use the threat of a long sentence to get him to wear a wire.
The gathered information allows Roberts and his task force to identify and search one of the last planes carrying Lucas' stock, discovering Blue Magic in the coffins of dead returning servicemen.
With this evidence they obtain a warrant to follow the drugs into Newark's projects and Lucas' heroin processing facility.
One such incident leads to a shootout where Lucas' young nephew Steve, who had gave up a promising career for the New York Yankees to join Lucas' crime family, is killed.
Meanwhile, Trupo seeks retaliation after Lucas destroys his prized Shelby Mustang ; he and his men later break into Lucas' mansion to steal his emergency cash supply hidden under the doghouse, killing the dog in the process.
Lucas plans to go after Trupo, but his mother dissuades her son from killing a cop by telling Lucas that she and Eva will leave him if he does.
Lucas is eventually arrested after Roberts' team conducts a raid on the shops run by his brothers. In the police station, Lucas threatens Roberts' life after attempting to bribe him no avail.
He eventually confides to Roberts about his hatred for the police; Lucas claims that he witnessed police officers murder his year-old cousin when he was just 6-years-old.
Following Lucas' corporation to Roberts' case, three-quarters of the New York DEA are arrested and convicted while Trupo himself commits suicide in light of his own corrupt activates getting exposed.
Roberts, having just passed the bar exam, defends Lucas as his first client. Lucas is sentenced to 70 years in prison, of which he serves 15 years and is released in After the closing credits, Lucas slowly walks toward the camera whilst backlighted.
He stops, raises his gun at the camera, and fires a gunshot that subsequently illuminates him. The film ends with no additional information.
In , Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment purchased the rights to "The Return of Superfly", by Mark Jacobson , an article published in New York magazine story about the rise and fall of the s heroin kingpin Frank Lucas.
However, Scott did not immediately pursue the project, choosing to make Kingdom of Heaven instead. In March , the studio entered new negotiations with Antoine Fuqua to direct, as well as Denzel Washington to star in the film as Frank Lucas.
Production of Tru Blu was reset to begin in early fall , with the film slated for a release date of June 3, The studio also sought for American Gangster to be produced in Toronto rather than New York City to save money, but Fuqua resisted the re-location.
The studio's parent company General Electric received tax credits in New York City, so production was moved to the city. Fuqua's camp insisted that it was seeking ways to reduce the budget, but the studio argued about several aspects of the project under him.
The director had wanted to film a Vietnam sequence in Thailand and to cast notable names such as Ray Liotta and John C.
Reilly in minor roles. To add to the studio's budgetary concerns, Fuqua was rewriting the script during the pre-production process.
The director did not have a shot-list, final locations, and supporting actors signed to initiate production.
Fuqua was fired on October 1, , four weeks before principal photography would begin. After Scott and Zaillian met on another project, Zaillian brought up the "Gangster" project again with Scott, who decided he was ready to do it.
Washington returned to his role as Lucas, and Russell Crowe was attached to star as Roberts. Scott had discussed the script with Crowe as they worked on A Good Year in France, and they sought to take on the project.
The director reviewed Zaillian's script, Terry George's rewrite, and a revision by Richard Price during the project's incarnation with director Antoine Fuqua.
Scott preferred Zaillian's approach and chose to follow it. The director encountered a challenge in the script, since the characters Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts do not encounter each other until twenty minutes before the end of the film.
The director sought to flesh out the private universes of these characters, which would evolve, and to have scenes cut between the two characters to provide a balance.
Elements such as Frank Lucas's interaction with his family and Richie Roberts's dysfunctional marriage were written to add to the characters' backgrounds.
The film somewhat focuses on the comparatively ethical business practices of the "wicked gangster" and the womanizing and failed marriage of the "do-gooder" police detective.
Washington, who was not normally a fan of gangster films, chose to portray Lucas when he saw "the arc of the character", which ended by showing the prices that Lucas paid for his actions.
To prepare for their roles, the actors met the actual persons. In addition, Washington took on Lucas' Southern accent, and Crowe practiced to match Roberts's manner of speaking and body language, requesting tape recordings of Roberts to assist in his preparation.
Principal photography began in July in New York City. Approximately fifty to sixty locations were set in Harlem alone. While in the neighbourhood, Scott stated that he found several interiors that had been untouched since the s.
According to production designer Arthur Max, exhaustive location scouting was done to find parts of New York that could still resemble the city of the early s, filming Lucas' headquarters at th Street 20 blocks north, on th Street.
Scott found filming in Harlem to be difficult, commenting that the rapid gentrification in Harlem provided poor opportunities for shooting angles.
Briarcliff Manor in upstate New York had the locations for both the Lucas farm and the estate Lucas buys for his family.
Using his experience from visiting New York in the same time period in which the film's story took place, Scott sought to downplay a " Beatles " atmosphere to the film and to instead create a shabbier atmosphere, saying that "Harlem was really, really shabby, beautiful brownstones falling apart.
Denzel Washington, as Frank Lucas, went through 64 different costume changes. In , Greg Calloway was approached by producers to produce a soundtrack for the film.
He presented the idea to Atlantic Records chairman Craig Kallman , and one of the company's artists, T. However, the deal did not go further because Universal Pictures owned the rights to the film; "It was a Universal film and they were not going to give the soundtrack to WMG " Atlantic's parent company.
The composer stated that "the overall tone needed to be something bigger and darker" given the characters' strong personalities, and while not being the original intention, he added shades of blues and soul music to fit the s setting.
Additional score material was composed and recorded by Hank Shocklee. The official soundtrack album for American Gangster was released by Def Jam Recordings within a week of the film's release.
Denzel Washington pressed Grazer into inviting rapper Jay-Z to write the film's score, but the producer "just didn't think there'd be enough for Jay-Z to do" given the intentions to do a soundtrack filled with s music.
The film had a profound resonance on the musician, who decided to create a concept album, also entitled American Gangster.
It was speculated that the album's release in conjunction with the film would attract a young audience and help Universal Pictures generate profits to recover from the film's troubled development history.
It immediately clicked with me. Like Scarface or any one of those films, you take the good out of it, and you can see it as an inspiring film.
The film experienced similar success overseas. It ranked as the 19th highest-grossing film of both domestically and worldwide. The home release included an unrated extended version of the film, featuring 18 additional minutes and an alternative ending.
A mobile game based on the film was released by Gameloft on November 1. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a perfect four star rating and opined, "This is an engrossing story, told smoothly and well.
IGN 's Jim "Stax" Vejvoda rated the film four out of five stars, praising the acting—particularly of the two protagonists, "both dynamic presences on-screen, with neither actor outweighing the other's importance to the story"—and declaring that despite being preceded by other gangster stories such as Scarface and The Sopranos , American Gangster managed to justify its existence with "emphasis on the human and class elements of the story".
In comparison, some reviewers were more critical of American Gangster. Jonathan Crocker of Time Out London was polarized with the film, criticizing its aesthetics.
In his review, he wrote, "Scott's meticulous aesthetics can't touch the urban texture and deep focus of The French Connection , The Godfather , Serpico and Prince of the City — all looming heavily in intertextual nods.
Similarly, Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a 'C-' grade, expressing that American Gangster is "never dull, but it could have used more good old-fashioned melodramatic intrigue.
Slant Magazine journalist Nick Schager harshly criticized the film, giving the film a one out of four stars. Schager remarked that the film was "dumb as a rock", and that it was "far too convinced of its import to be any fun.
That shoulder-shimmying swagger is rarely seen, and the brand-classic robes of American Gangster sit on him heavily. Roberts criticized the portrayal of Lucas, describing it as "almost noble".
Sterling Johnson Jr. While McMahon noted that the intertitle that appears at the end of the film, stating that Lucas' collaboration led to the arrest of many corrupt DEA agents, was "wholly inaccurate", in that Lucas' cooperation did not lead to the convictions, and admonished that "It would behoove a major corporation like Universal which is owned by a major news organization, NBC not to put inaccurate statements at the end of popular films", she stated that the film failed to meet legal standards of defamation because it failed to "show a single person who is identifiable as a DEA agent".
Many of Lucas' other claims, as presented in the film, have also been called into question, such as being the right-hand man of Bumpy Johnson , rising above the power of the Mafia and Nicky Barnes , and that he was the mastermind behind the Golden Triangle heroin connection of the s.
Ron Chepesiuk, a biographer of Frank Lucas, deemed the story as a myth. Associated Press entertainment writer Frank Coyle noted that "this mess happened partly because journalists have been relying on secondary sources removed from the actual events.
American Gangster earned various awards and nominations, in categories ranging from recognition of the film itself to its screenplay and music, to the performances of Ruby Dee and Denzel Washington.
Prior to the film's release, it was observed as a candidate for the Academy Awards based on its style and the performances of its actors, including the possibility of an Academy Award for Best Director for Ridley Scott.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theatrical release poster. Ridley Scott Brian Grazer. Release date. Running time. He wears nice clothes and drives fancy cars and all that, so if that means glorifying it I guess that's the case.
But for me I was looking at the arc of the character, and he don't look that glorious right now. Scott loves his bad guy too much. And by turning Lucas into a figure who seduces instead of repels, an object of directorial fetishism and a token of black resistance, however hollow, he encourages us to submit as well.
Part of this is structural and economic: blood and nihilism are always better sells than misery and hopelessness. Yet there's also a historical dimension, because when Lucas strolls down a fast-emptying Harlem street after putting a bullet into another man's head and the camera pulls back for the long view, you are transported into the realm of myth.
Once, another gunman, or the director, might have taken direct aim at Lucas. But the world belongs to gangsters now, not cowboys. United States portal Film portal Law portal.
